Mikey Smith on Nigel Farage’s ‘hypocrisy’ in supporting Trump’s complaint against Labour

Mikey Smith, the political reporter for the Mirror, recently appeared on The Division Bell podcast, discussing the controversial complaint lodged by former President Donald Trump against the Labour Party, that deemed their actions as ‘blatant foreign interference’. In a striking turn of events, Smith accused Nigel Farage of hypocrisy for supporting this complaint, considering his frequent and flamboyant peddling on American political terrain.

“Nigel Farage, has seemingly forgotten his numerous travels to the U.S., in support of President Trump,” Smith started. He highlighted how Farage not so long ago, in August, actually flew over to the Republican National Convention (RNC) on a private jet costing approximately 33,000 pounds. The journey was generously funded by one of Farage’s party donors.

Smith argued that this alone exposes double standards on Farage’s part. He himself had been involved in American politics, from across the Atlantic ocean, for quite some time and was now critiquing the Labour Party for ‘foreign interference’.

“American election rules are pretty clear in these matters. Any expenditure over a thousand pounds is considered a donation and such donations are unequivocally illegal,” Smith added. Drawing attention to the explicit contradiction in Farage’s actions, Smith inferred that the Trump supporter may have willingly ignored rules that he himself was supposed to abide by.

Smith defended Labour volunteers who were caught up in Trump’s allegations, stating they were being unfairly victimised. It is understood that Trump’s complaint was spurred by the Labour Party’s digital campaign targeted at left-leaning US citizens, urging them to vote against him.

Smith noted, “The distinction between supporting a cause and ‘blatant interference’ seems to be blurred. Supporting a candidate or a cause doesn’t translate into interfering. Farage’s trans-Atlantic flying escapades, however, toe a very fine line.”

This isn’t the first time Farage has showed unwavering support for Donald Trump. Farage has not just been a vocal supporter of Trump but has often been seen actively campaigning for him. This includes his participation in welcoming Trump at a Mississippi rally in 2016 and publicly endorsing him during a Trump campaign rally in Phoenix in 2020.

Smith further probed, “Is it not interference when Farage uses his significant influence in Britain to rave about Trump on British airwaves?”

The Division Bell’s episode featuring Smith’s insights comes at a crucial time when Trump’s complaint has pushed the Labour Party into an uncomfortable spotlight. The contention lies between what constitutes ‘support’ and what classifies as ‘interference’ in international politics.

Smith concluded, “It is overwhelmingly crucial to establish an objective discourse about what hypocrisy really means. Farage’s support for Trump’s complaint today invokes questions about his own engagement in US politics yesterday. ‘Blatant foreign interference’ must be evaluated without bias, irrespective of the players involved.”

Smith ended his appearance on the podcast calling for a more consistent approach to political foreign involvement, highlighting the need for clear, fair and enforced boundaries.
